Vegan Sushi, Pizza and Tacos for an Austin Getaway

I’m bookmarking Austin food stops for black bean tempeh BBQ, creative sushi and big vegan pizza slices.

My kind of trip planning starts with food, and Veggies Abroad’s Austin vegan guide has plenty to build a delicious day around. I’d start with ATXFOODCO., a bright green food truck at 517 S Lamar Boulevard, where the BBQ brisket is made from heirloom black bean tempeh. Almost everything on the menu is gluten-free, too.

For a sit-down dinner, I’m drawn to Nori at 3208 Guadalupe Street. The vegan Japanese restaurant serves sushi featuring ingredients like spicy Good Catch plant-based tuna, Just Egg tamago and tempura asparagus, plus creamy ramen and onigiri.

I’d also make room for Lil’ Nonna’s at 2908 Fruth Street: NY-style vegan pizza slices with toppings including Beeteroni and smoky tempeh. Then there’s The Vegan Nom at 2324 E Cesar Chavez Street, with breakfast tacos available before 4 p.m. Cactus, vegan chorizo or potatoes? That’s a happy little planning dilemma.
